9-17-23 Bo Crouch ~ Host of Football Talk
In an exciting overtime victory, the Hawks showed creativity on offense to mask the deficiency at the tackle position. Bringing in an occasional 3 tight end set and spreading the ball out to 9 different targets throughout the game. After a nice opening drive that landed them in the endzone, you could tell the team had a lot more energy than what they exhibited in week 1 against the Rams. DK getting hurt on that drive was a bit of a scare but fortunately he only missed a couple series before coming back in and finishing the day with 6 catches for 75 yards.
Geno had another efficient day going 32 of 41 for 328 and a pair of touchdowns. The running game although on the stat sheet went for 102 yards it wasn't a strong performance with Walker providing the bulk of the attempts (17) for just 43 yards it workout to a slugging 2.5 yards per carry. Geno scampered for 20 yards of his own with Charbonnet and Dallas rounding out the rushing attack.
The Defense that was still very susceptible to shots across the middle were able to create 3 timely turnovers which ended up being one of the only statistical categories where the Hawks were better than the Lions. Woolen getting injured in the 4th quarter made you think this game could get away from them as Tre Brown took the field. Tre brown had a great 4th quarter logging 4 tackles, a sack, an interception and a forced fumble. You really couldn't ask for a better next man up performance as we wait to see if Riq will be ready for next week. The front seven is still a work in progress and have a lot of guys banged up at this point. As much as I am not a big fan of the week 5 bye week on the schedule it may ultimately be good for the Hawks this season.
It goes in the win column against a dynamic Detroit offense that was able to take down the reining Superbowl champs the week before. Although there are a lot of questions surrounding both the offensive and defensive lines moving forward there were plenty of elements to build on heading into their match up with the Panthers next week back in front of the 12's where you know the crowed will be electric in Lumen Field
